| A Look into Bowling Green from Harper's Weekly (3/15/1862) |
I missed posting this a couple days ago, but readers of the Lancaster Daily Evening Express were treated to this account of the Confederate retreat from Bowling Green (forced by Grant's successes at Forts Henry and Donelson). The Union troops involved had leapfrogged McCook's division and the 79th Pennsylvania, who followed along a week later.
It's a mystery to me who wrote this letter, but my guess is that it was a war correspondent for another paper--obvious candidates include the Louisville Journal, Cincinnati Gazette, Philadelphia Press, or New York Tribune--whose report the Daily Evening Express simply copied to the front page of its February 24, 1862, paper: (alternate link)
